Lawton Animal Welfare (LAW) provides public health and safety for the citizens and animals of Lawton, Oklahoma. Our first focus is ensuring that the streets are safe by capturing animals running freely through the neighborhoods before they become injured or cause injury. The second focus is the enforcement of animal related ordinances that ensure the health and safety of all concerned as well as the needless over-breeding of animals within the City of Lawton. Once in our care, LAW is committed to providing humane care and protection of animals while they are in our facility.

Lawton Animal Welfare firmly believes that every animal’s life is valuable and that every effort should be taken to save each life through owner reclaims, adoption, or foster care placement through a rescue organization. This is accomplished through our P.E.T.S. program: Promoting proper care of the animal; Educating the public on pet ownership and its responsibility, including the necessity of spaying and neutering their pet; Training staff, volunteers, and the public on how to handle animals; and Saving each life that we can, ‘One Animal at a Time.’
Lawton Animal Welfare also believes that pet over-population can be reduced by spaying and neutering pets. We validate this belief by performing surgical spay and neutering on all animals that are adopted or rescued from the shelter and by informing owners that are reunited with intact animals of the value of the spay/neuter programs.
When James, a playful Shepherd Mix, and his buddy slipped out one Spring day at the start of Covid 2020, his owner, Tina, was devasted. She searched tirelessly around her home in Frederick, OK looking for her beloved pets, but neither was to be found. Days turned into months, and months into years. Tina had given hope and worried that something terrible had happened to her babies.
Then, five years later, an email changed everything. A dog had been brought into the Lawton Animal Welfare Division. As is our policy, we always scan for a microchip on every cat and dog that comes through our facility. We scanned the dog for a microchip and it was one of our previously adopted dogs. We attempted to call the registered owner. The phone was no longer in service, but an email was on file. When Tina Wilhite read her email, she couldn't believe it! Yes, she had a dog named James...but he had disappeared five years ago! She called Animal Welfare to speak to a staff member. She was so worried about his condition and health because he had been gone for so long. We were glad to report that James appeared happy and healthy. Tina couldn't wait to come get her sweet boy.
Tears flowed as they reunited, James' tail wagging excitedly as if no time had passed. Thank to a tiny microchip, he was finally back HOME!
Microchipping saves lives and reunites families-don't leave your pet's safety to chance.
A huge shout out to the volunteers from the Advanced Leadership Class 008-25 for spending time with us at the Lawton Animal Welfare Division. These soldiers got to experience a day in the life of working at our facility. The soldier volunteers walked the dogs and provided them with mental stimulation outside of the kennels. Our volunteers provide an invaluable service to the shelter dogs who rarely get to experience the outdoors once placed here. We are fortunate to have had the ALC Class enrich the lives of the canines for whom we care. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

A huge thank you to the volunteers from Fort Sill's MWR B.O.S.S. (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) Program for spending the afternoon walking our shelter dogs and providing hands-on assistance for staff. Their visit consisted of only a couple of hours, but the help they offered was immeasurable. In addition to walking the dogs, the volunteers helped organize our feed room as well as build a janitorial cart for our kennel. We can't say for sure, but we're pretty certain their favorite part was spending time with the dogs!
We appreciate the B.O.S.S. Program and hope that spending time here with us enriched the lives of the soldiers in some small (or big) way. We look forward to hosting more single soldier volunteers with the B.O.S.S. Program in the future.

The Lawton Animal Welfare Division was contacted by Heaven Speirs of Parks Jones Realtors on February 20, 2025. She had read our Facebook post about the shelter having an abundance of puppies, seventy-five (75) to be exact. She and the staff at Parks Jones Realtors wanted to help by sponsoring some of the adoptions of the puppies. She wasn't sure how many they could sponsor, but she knew it was a mission she was ready to take on! Ms. Speirs is an avid animal lover herself and is a former foster mom for the Humane Society. She coordinated with staff and was able to secure a generous donation of $2013.00! The donation was large enough to sponsor ALL of the remaining sixty-one (61) puppies in our shelter. On February 27, Heaven and Holly Naberhaus made their way down to Animal Welfare and hand-delivered the donation to us. As we took them on a tour through the facility, Heaven and Holly got to see all of the little ones whose lives will be changed because of them and the other donors at Parks Jones Realtors. Their support means a lot-not just to these puppies, but to the families whose lives they will brighten. This kind of community partnership makes all the difference, and we are so grateful for your dedication to making a positive impact. We are so very thankful to everyone at Parks Jones Realtors and look forward to seeing all of the puppies find their furever homes!
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
