Lawton Animal Welfare (LAW) provides public health and safety for the citizens and animals of Lawton, Oklahoma. Our first focus is ensuring that the streets are safe by capturing animals running freely through the neighborhoods before they become injured or cause injury. The second focus is the enforcement of animal related ordinances that ensure the health and safety of all concerned as well as the needless over-breeding of animals within the City of Lawton. Once in our care, LAW is committed to providing humane care and protection of animals while they are in our facility.

Lawton Animal Welfare firmly believes that every animal’s life is valuable and that every effort should be taken to save each life through owner reclaims, adoption, or foster care placement through a rescue organization. This is accomplished through our P.E.T.S. program: Promoting proper care of the animal; Educating the public on pet ownership and its responsibility, including the necessity of spaying and neutering their pet; Training staff, volunteers, and the public on how to handle animals; and Saving each life that we can, ‘One Animal at a Time.’

Lawton Animal Welfare also believes that pet over-population can be reduced by spaying and neutering pets. We validate this belief by performing surgical spay and neutering on all animals that are adopted or rescued from the shelter and by informing owners that are reunited with intact animals of the value of the spay/neuter programs.

Ft. Sill's Leadership Class Lends a Paw at Lawton Animal Welfare

On August 2, volunteers from Fort Sill’s Advanced Leadership Class 015-25 spent the day lending a helping hand at Lawton Animal Welfare. The group eagerly jumped in to walk dogs, giving the pups some much-needed exercise and attention. They also assisted in the cat adoption area, where they helped care for and socialize with the feline residents. Their time was filled with wagging tails, purrs, and plenty of smiles. The volunteers shared how much they enjoyed connecting with the animals, knowing their efforts made a difference in their comfort and happiness while they wait for new homes.

If your organization, team, or group would like to volunteer at our shelter, please call us at 580-581-3219 or email at angela.mcguire@lawtonok.gov. We look forward to hearing from you!

🐾 Wild Side of L.A.W. 🦉🦝🦅🦔🦌

At Lawton Animal Welfare, it’s not just cats and dogs that find their way to us. Sometimes, our days include caring for the wild neighbors with whom we share our community. 🐿️🦉

From majestic birds of prey and curious raccoons, to playful squirrels, gentle opossums, quick-footed rabbits, adorable fawns, and yes—even a prickly porcupine—these animals receive compassionate care as we prepare them for safe transport to licensed wildlife rehabilitators or relocation.

Every creature deserves a chance to heal and return to the wild where they belong. 🌿💚 We’re proud to play a small role in their journey back home.

    Supervisor of the year

Lawton Animal Welfare's Superintendent, Cliff Blasengame, was awarded Supervisor of the Year at the City of Lawton's 2025 Employee Awards Banquet.

When Cliff began his role as Superintendent at Lawton Animal Welfare in July 2024, he wanted to bring about change- a change in the public's perception of Animal Welfare, a change in morale among staff, and a change in the quality of the shelter as a whole.

Since then, Cliff has secured a contract for a new, modern Animal Welfare facility. He has also implemented changes in staff which has led to a significant increase in morale and improved the quality of customer service in the field and at the shelter. He has implemented new training avenues for the Animal Control Officers which will enable them to better serve the community. He continually advocates for better shelter management software and updated equipment for housing, veterinary care, and safety.

Cliff came into his new position with a clear vision and determination to shine a positive light on Lawton Animal Welfare. His leadership and hard work in the past eleven months has been a valuable asset to Lawton Animal Welfare and the Lawton community. This award was well-deserved and we could not be more proud of our Superintendent. Congratulations!

Teen Leader Leaves a Paw-sitive Mark on Lawton

Rachel Barrera’s Girl Scout Gold Award Project Supports Lawton Animal Welfare

At just 15 years old, Rachel Barrera is already proving that leadership, compassion, and community service knows no age limit. A proud member of Girl Scout Troop 149, Rachel recently completed her Girl Scout Gold Award Project-one of the highest honors in Girl Scouting- by making a meaningful contribution to Lawton Animal Welfare.

Rachel, a homeschooled 10th grader, chose Lawton Animal Welfare as the focus of her project after discovering the shelter on Facebook. A lifelong animal lover, she felt inspired to help and believed the project was both achievable and a valuable step toward her future college goals.

“I’ve always loved animals,” Rachel shared. “When I found the Lawton Animal Welfare on Facebook, I knew I wanted to help.” Rachel’s altruistic idea was to create a guidebook for the Lawton Animal Welfare as her Gold Award Project. The 109-page guide, Staying Paw-sitively Smart: A Guide to Keeping Pets Healthy, Happy, and Safe, covers the care and responsibilities of pet ownership of the animal types we see in our shelter. This guide will be linked on our website under the “Resources” tab.

Despite her short time in Lawton, Rachel’s dedication has made a lasting impression on the shelter and the animals in its care. Her efforts reflect more than just a school project—they showcase a genuine passion for service and a drive to make a difference wherever life takes her.

In addition to her impressive 12-year journey in Girl Scouts, Rachel is also pursuing her Eagle Award through Boy Scouts—a rare and commendable dual path. She balances her commitment to both Scouts with hobbies like hiking, painting, sculpting, and swimming competitively as part of a local swim team.

Rachel’s family, including her father who serves in the U.S. Army, will soon be relocating to Germany. She leaves behind not just friends and memories in Lawton, but a community uplifted by her efforts. As one of five siblings, Rachel also sets an inspiring example for her three sisters and one brother.

Though her time in Lawton was brief, Rachel Barrera’s legacy will live on through the improved lives of shelter animals and the people who care for them, and the community who utilizes our website. Lawton Animal Welfare is proud to have been the focus of her Gold Award and is grateful for the difference she’s made.

      five years gone

Five Years Gone, One Microchip, and a Miracle Reunion

When James, a playful Shepherd Mix, and his buddy slipped out one Spring day at the start of Covid 2020, his owner, Tina, was devasted. She searched tirelessly around her home in Frederick, OK looking for her beloved pets, but neither was to be found. Days turned into months, and months into years. Tina had given hope and worried that something terrible had happened to her babies.

Then, five years later, an email changed everything. A dog had been brought into the Lawton Animal Welfare Division. As is our policy, we always scan for a microchip on every cat and dog that comes through our facility. We scanned the dog for a microchip and it was one of our previously adopted dogs. We attempted to call the registered owner. The phone was no longer in service, but an email was on file. When Tina Wilhite read her email, she couldn't believe it! Yes, she had a dog named James...but he had disappeared five years ago! She called Animal Welfare to speak to a staff member. She was so worried about his condition and health because he had been gone for so long. We were glad to report that James appeared happy and healthy. Tina couldn't wait to come get her sweet boy.

Tears flowed as they reunited, James' tail wagging excitedly as if no time had passed. Thank to a tiny microchip, he was finally back HOME!

Microchipping saves lives and reunites families-don't leave your pet's safety to chance.
